Editorial

It struck us that relatively little attention is given to developing listening skills or even considering the nature of listening.

The Eavesdropper blog is devoted exclusively to the art of listening. It presupposes that sound making happens in the mind, and is interested in those occasions in which the listener transforms psycho-acoustic phenomena into sonic sensations. This introspection of the listener, and the analysis of how sounds are created through cognitive effort, provide the main idea of the blog.

The blog collects articles, images, videos and sounds that describe an array of extraordinary postures available to any person who wishes to deepen their understanding of listening practice in the real world.

As such, it is a highly subjective and playful companion to the listening arts that assumes no authority and tries to forego highbrow rhetoric. Here, journalistic objectivity and academic long-windedness play second fiddle to idiosyncratic research methods, essayistic prose poems and introspective assertion.
